The ferry ride to Ullapool was long, and we were thrilled to be back on the mainland. I had a few places marked on Google Maps, so after starting our directions, we headed out for our first stop. According to NorthCoast500, “The North Coast 500 brings together a route of more than 500 miles of stunning coastal scenery – 516 miles, to be exact.” Driving the NC500 is described as “challenging and not for the faint of heart, but very worth it” I agree 100%. It might only be 45 miles to your first stop of the day, but it will take at least 2 hours minimum. Most of the roads are one lane with placing places.

Our first stop was Durness Beach, and both of us were speechless! It was breathtaking and rugged, with huge boulders on white sand. We hiked down to the water and spent a fair amount of time exploring. At one point, the tide started returning, so I took my shoes off and walked barefoot in the sand. It was frigid but so worth it!

We jumped back in the car and continued our drive to our hotel for the next few nights. Forss House was one of the places on my To Visit List. The bathtubs sold me first off! It didn’t disappoint by any means! After we checked in, we walked around the property. We enjoyed the trails before dinner that evening which was a 7-course tasting menu. So delicious!

The following day we drove to the Northern-most Point of Great Britain. You could see for miles! We hiked up to the very top to see the lookout point. After that, we drove over to the touristy stop called John-O’Groats. After that, we both were ready to relax for the rest of the day.

Thursday was our last full day in Scotland. We were flying out of Inverness the next morning so we just took our time getting to our last hotel. The only place I really had on the map was Dunrobin Castle and Gardens. It is an inhabited castle that has tours during the spring and summer. We also were able to see the Falcon exhibition.

Neither one of us were ready to check in to the hotel that night so we drove to one last beach in Nairn. We walked the coastline and sat on an old log…. saying our goodbyes for now. I can truly say this was the most Epic Vacation so far!

By this time, we were hungry, and I wanted to check out the small village of Carbost. We ate at Cafe Cuil, and I had the best Scotch Pancakes with rhubarb & gingernut crumble and gorse flower mascarpone!! Delicious!!! After that, we drove into the village, found a parking spot, and walked to the Caora Dhubh Coffee Company, Gaelic for Black Sheep. Later that afternoon, we hiked to Harlosh Point and climbed around the rocks.

Sunday was drizzly and dreary, and we enjoyed an entire day just relaxing and resting. After all the driving and hiking, it was exactly what we needed, especially since we would be riding the ferry to the Isle of Lewis the next day.

Monday morning, we packed for the next leg of our trip… a quick overnight stay at the Isle of Lewis so I could visit the much-anticipated standing stones! Since our ferry didn’t depart until 2, we took another hike to the Rha Waterfalls at Uig. They were magical with all the forest around them! No one else was around!

After a 2 hour ferry ride, we landed at Talbert. We took a minute to ensure we knew where we were going and started our hour’s drive to the Callanish Standing Stones. I found a Bnb within walking distance called Gealabhat Callanish Bed & Breakfast. We ended up staying in the Barn, one of the nicest places we rented! I was very disappointed that we had only one night!

After checking into the Barn, we walked down to the standing stones… As soon as you get near, you can feel the energy! It was almost overwhelming. I walked along each stone, tracing the path of the ancients. There are 13 stones along the main circle. I wanted to return later that night in the dark, but it didn’t get dark out!

We had an early ferry the following day, so after a wonderful dinner with our host and other guests, Susan and Shelia, we headed to bed, knowing that this was on my list of places to visit again!

We had booked a one-night stay at a lodge as an in-between before we went to the Isle of Skye because we thought we would be staying at the gathering until late afternoon. But by us leaving early, it allowed us extra time to explore. We stopped in Fort Williams for lunch and a bookstore, then drove to the Great Glen Way View Point. It was another beautiful forest where we took our time exploring.

Our accommodations for the night were at the Corriegour Lodge Hotel, an 1800s Victorian Hunting Lodge. We had the BEST dinner ever there! My goal was to try different foods, so I had lamb chops. (At the Isles of Glencoe, I actually ate haggis and black pudding!!!)

We woke up early to head to Skye, and after a delicious breakfast, we were on our way! Knowing that petrol stations were few and far between, I made sure our first stop before we crossed the Skye Bridge was fuel and snacks. We drove along the coast since we couldn’t check into our rental house until 4:00. We stopped at quite a few places, including Old Man Storr, the dinosaur footprints, Duntulm Castle, and the grave site of Flora MacDonald.

After a full day of driving and exploring, we were thrilled to be able to check into the Black House H at Harlosh!! It was exactly what we hoped it would be!!

Breakfast in Fort Augustus was somewhat of a bust…. on our second cafe, we did have delicious scones, but it wasn’t the full breakfast I was hoping for… Oh well, I did get a good coffee. They sprinkled cocoa powder on the top of the cappuccino, which was new to me, but I did enjoy it! We walked to the Loch Ness again too!

Before we checked into our hotel at Glencoe, we drove into town. We found the Glencoe Forest and the MacDonald Massacre Memorial. I have MacDonald ancestors, and it’s hard to describe my feelings and emotions as I walked up to the monument. The forest was exactly what our soul needed….. giant trees, grass, water, and stillness!

The gathering was held at the Isles of Glencoe Hotel. We ended up with a lake-side room with the best views. The event was fun, and we had dinner with a couple from Rome who’s first language was not English! We had a blast trying to understand each other! We also got to tour our property in the Glencoe Reserve. Seeing the endangered Scottish Cat was extra special.

During the afternoon of the second day, we played hooky. We drove to Oban, where we toured McCraig’s Tower, the Fairy Maze, hiked along Ganavan beach, and the Dunstaffnage Castle, built by Curtis’ twenty-fifth grandfather. Glencoe and Oban were one of our favorite areas to visit again!
