Curtis and I stayed in an Airbnb in Neosho the night before our meeting. The loft was not exactly up to our standard; however, we did stop at a very eclectic coffee shop just off the square called The Clay Cup. A cappuccino for me and a chia for him is the usual order. They also host pottery classes! I highly recommend putting this one on your list if you are in the area!

That morning before we headed out to the team meeting, we had breakfast at Downtown Nutrition. I had stopped there during my last trip to Neosho, so I knew what to expect, but I was excited to introduce it to Curtis. We each ordered a protein shake and shared a protein waffle. They had protein in them, so that makes them healthy, right?? It was definitely worth the sugar high!

After our meetings were over, we headed to Springfield for the night. I tried to top off my caffeine tank before we got into town, but after two coffee shops that were a bust, I decided the universe was telling me I had enough for the day!! 😉

I stayed at an Airbnb this past weekend that, of all things, did not have a coffee pot in the room or in the house. This gave me the perfect excuse to stop at multiple places while I was in town.

Echelon Coffee is located on Glenstone right off of I-44, so it’s usually one of the first stops that I make as I come into town. They have great iced coffees! Their cookies are a favorite too…. try the snickerdoodle if they have any left! If you are looking for more than just a snack, we have had their breakfast burritos before too and they are delicious.

Big Momma’s Coffee and Espresso Bar is another regular stop for me! It was raining like crazy on Saturday morning and all I could think about was a cappuccino and a scone for breakfast. They are located on Historic Commercial Street and have a fun, laid-back vibe with plenty of seating. It was just what I needed on a rainy day!

Before I headed home on Sunday, I went to Eurasia Coffee Co. for a coffee and avocado toast. I wanted to fuel up before I went exploring! After hiking and exploring, I stopped at Classic Rock Coffee Co. This coffee shop is my new favorite because it covers my two favorite things coffee and rock-n-roll!!!

We started the trail at Belmont Vineyards in Leasburg, Missouri. The winery sits on top of a hill and overlooks the vineyard giving you beautiful views of the rolling hills. Just off of I-44 and Route 66, Belmont has a beautiful indoor and outdoor venue for events and parties. We were served a delicious tasting Strawberry Glazed Pork Tenderloin with walnut pesto on avocado crostini paired with Dry Rosé. The pork was very tender, and the wine had hints of strawberry. One of the owners, Jeff Voss, chatted with us and told us a fun fact about Belmont Vineyards; Belmont is actually his middle name! He also told us that the grapes used in the wine were tiny little grapes, and he has to fight the birds for them every year. We took a moment to soak in the view and then hopped into the car to head to our next stop. 

About 30 miles from Belmont Vineyards, off of Highway 19, is Red Moose Vineyard. The driveway to the vineyard is through the woods, and as you turn the final corner, you are met with the most stunning views. The building itself is impressive, and the vineyard is so picturesque. There is even a lake with a dock that you can sit on and enjoy your wine; relaxing and peaceful describes it to a tee. According to their website, Red Moose was established in 2006 by two brothers, whose high school nicknames were Red and Moose. Our pairing was Creamy Chicken Salad Bites with Sweet Rosé. The grapes were grown on the property, and the fermentation is off the skins. Described as a “deliciously sweet Chambourcin Rose’ with mouth-watering flavors of juicy wild berries in every sip.  A perfect picnic wine to serve chilled from the cooler.” The chicken salad was delicious and light, not too heavy, perfect for a picnic. Knowing that we had a time limit to make all the stops on the trail didn’t leave us a lot of time to stay, but when you visit Red Moose, you will want to spend the day soaking in the peace, quiet, and beauty. 

Off of Highway 8 outside of Steelville, Missouri, our next stop was Peaceful Bend Winery. Peaceful Bend began life in the 1940s as a livestock farm owned by gentleman farmer & St. Louis doctor Axel Arneson.  After discovering a love of wine and grape growing in the early sixties, Axel and his wife decided to plant a small vineyard at Peaceful Bend in 1965.  By 1970 the Arneson’s had decided to open a public winery and realized their dream to open to the public by 1972.  From 1972 – 1990 the winery was a family affair and a weekend retreat for the Arneson family.” The current owners, Clyde and Katie, purchased the vineyard in 1998. Again, the location of the Winery is perfect. Make sure you get a table off the back porch for the best views. The pairing at Peaceful Bend was a Strawberry Salsa Crostinis with Huzzah Valley Rosé. The salsa had just the right blend of spicy and sweet, plus it really brought out the flavor of the wine. Katie chatted with us a bit and told us that the fisherman called that bend in the Meramec River the Peaceful Bend, hence the winery’s name.  

Our fourth stop was on the main street in St. James, Missouri. Just A Taste is an unforgettable experience. Their website describes the venue as “three gorgeous event spaces; Top Shelf, The Tasting Room, and the Jefferson Cellar.” You will want to see it for yourself; exposed brick, dark wood accents, and such a fun vibe when you walk in the door. We were welcomed by Casey, one of the owners, and sat at the bar. The pairing was Smoked Short Rib Tostada topped with lime-cabbage slaw paired with Eagles’ Landing 2020 From Rosati With Love Rosé. Did you know that Eagles’ Landing’s origin began with two friends, an Italian and German lineage, both having an eagle in their family crest! The pairing was excellent, as always. 

The next to last stop on the wine trail was also in St. James, Missouri. St. James Winery, located just off I-44, is described according to their website as a family-owned, internationally awarded winery in Missouri’s Ozark Highlands wine country that opened in 1970. Two lovely ladies behind the counter greeted us. As they served our pairing of Lemon Pepper Butter Shrimp with Lemon-Garlic Horseradish Sauce paired with Sparkling Rosé, the ladies shared fun stories about the winery, prohibition, and concord grapes. We also found out that the sign out front of St James Winery was Pat’s personal project! She even had the grapes in the logo made specifically for the sign. 

We ended the Meramec River Wine trail at one of our favorite places, Meramec Vineyard Winery.  Joe & Michelle Boulware purchased the winery in 2018 and have really given it a “rebirth,” as they call it on their website. Meramec Vineyard Winery is a casual, family-friendly venue that is warm and welcoming. Their pairing for the event was a fried Plantain Chip, Black Bean Hummus, Pickled Red Onion, Queso Fresco paired with Sweet Cat Sangria. Michelle shared with us that the Sweet Cat wine sampled on the trail this weekend was their first wine to be used for sangria in 2018! As I mentioned, Meramec Vineyard is one of our favorite places to eat, and we were not disappointed with the pairing. 

The Meramec River Wine Trail was an enjoyable afternoon adventure. I highly recommend getting your tickets early for the next event. There are two more planned for this year, and I do know that they sell out quickly!

Not only do they have an amazing restaurant (with local delivery), an event venue, and a winery, they also offer an online wine store. Their website has such great details, plus it is easy to order for yourself or a holiday gift. But what I really love about Joe and Michelle is their willingness to pivot and adapt when things aren’t so normal.

As you know, with most wineries, tastings are a key feature to offer at the wine counter. But with all the restrictions lately, Meramec Vineyard hasn’t been able to offer this to their customers. Instead, they have come up with a unique product called the Tasting Kit, and they have paired it with an online event. (Yes, I did that on purpose). We are now in a brand new building and have expanded our business to include making craft beer and offering an eatery.”

Walking into the winery, we quickly found that the atmosphere inside was a warm contrast to the rainy weather outside. Katie welcomed us as we sat down and took our order. This wasn’t our first time to Peaceful Bend, but it was the first time we sat inside the dining room. During the summer, they have fun outdoor concerts and events like Burger Bash! Along with the tacos, they were featuring an Apple Cider Sangria. It was so good we had to have a second glass! Our tacos were delicious as well, and we really enjoyed visiting with Katie after we ate! I made sure that I left room for dessert. We split a Nacho Sundae, and it was worth the calories for sure!! You can see that Curtis was ready to dive in!!

According to their Facebook Page, The building was “built in 1932 by Paul T. Carr who operated under the Phillips 66, Skelly, and Standard Oil brands, as well as a Pontiac dealership until his death in 1964. Carr’s gas station would provide the first jobs for many of the young people of Cuba. Purchased in 1968 by Bill and Lynn Wallis, it would become their first Mobil station and office. After Bill Wallis passed away in 2001, Lynn began a project to restore the property to honor Bill and the history of the station. Wallis Oil has grown to over 600 employees and is now located across the street.

A blog post on Viva Cuba’s website continues the story of how the building became what is now known as The FourWay. “In 2015, the station had been empty since it was the site of the Washington Street Bakery. Joanie Weir, who previously worked in St. Louis restaurants, began a complete interior renovation of the restaurant. On Saturday, April 2, 2016, at 4:00 pm, the vintage restored Phillips 66 station at the corner of Route 66 and Highway 19 underwent one more change in its long history when The Fourway Restaurant opened.”

The FourWay has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants in Cuba. When we walk through the front door, the waitress warmly greets us and asks if we would like our “usual” seat. They are great at making you feel like part of the family. The tables’ unique arrangement gives you the feel of eating at home, while the menu quickly lets you know that this is no ordinary restaurant.

Curtis’s favorite is the Leroy Burger and fries, while I like to try what on special for the night. A recent addition to the appetizer menu is the Gigandes Plaki, a hearty white beans in a light tomato sauce topped with feta and fresh dill. This is what I order if there isn’t a special for the evening. It’s the perfect size for me, and I enjoy every bite!

Last week, Chef Sam made his favorite Avgolemono Soup. (I actually had to look it up… Ahvo-lemono, as the Greeks pronounce it, is a silky, rich, fragrant chicken soup, prepared Greek-style with avgolemono sauce (lemon-egg sauce.) It was the best dish for a cold fall evening, especially with the time change and feeling so dark and cold in the evening. It was served with a side of pita bread, which was perfect for dipping!

There is so much more I could say about The FourWay, but I will leave it at this…. try it for yourself and then let me know what you think!
